Summary: She Inherited Her Sister's Killer!
Comment: Maggie Nesbett is in a fix. She is pregnant, her famous anchorman husband isn't the father of her child, what's more, he's been fixed, so he can't have kids, so there will be no fooling him. Usually a good girl, she only strayed once, but once was all it took. She wants to keep the baby, but she's afraid abortion is her only way out.

Then a body found behind a gay bar is mistaken for her. It's the twin she'd thought had died when she was a child. Without thinking, Maggie takes her dead sister's place, only to find her twin had a daughter, an ex-husband and a god fearing fiancé who is only after her money. She also had a killer on her trail, who apparently had succeeded in killing her, only in his eyes now, she is not dead.

Horace Nighthyde is fit to be tied. He'd been paid to kill a witness to a murder, had done it, only now she's alive again. Not possible, he thinks, but it's a situation he vows to make right.

And there you have the genesis of a story that kept me awake into the wee hours of the morning. DEAD RINGER is about a woman on the run, but she fights back. She has friends, strong friends from both from her old life and her new, but ultimately it's Maggie who must stand against the killer and she does it in one of the best showdowns I have ever read. This is a book to die for, you simply must read it.

Summary: Super Nifty Birthday Present
Comment: My twin sister gave me DEAD RINGER for my birthday (January 8th) and I read it in one day. I was intrigued with the idea of a twin taking over her sister's identity, it made for a super story line. When we were growing up (we're twenty-four now) we often traded places, confusing our parents, siblings, friends and even teachers. In fact I was so horrible at math in college that Leeann took Trig and Calc 1A for me and I did PoliSci 1A and B for her and nobody ever figured it out. Whoops, that's supposed to be a secret. Anyway, because of our past experiences at fooling people, I know it's possible for one twin to pretend she's the other with nobody being the wiser.

I especially liked how Maggie, the heroine of the story, got to keep her baby and how she dumped her twin's awful fiancée and how she told off that minister who had been controlling her dead sister's life. I also liked that fact that Maggie was such a strong character who didn't go whining to some guy when she got in trouble. She solved her own problems, fought her own battles, though her faithful friend Gordon, the gay ex-FBI agent, did fight along with her. He was another super-super character.

This was a book full of characters you'd like to get to know better, people you wouldn't mind inviting home for dinner. Even the despicable Horace Nighthyde was sort of sympathetic in a pathetic kind of way.

I know my sister bought me this book because the author's last name was so close to ours, and I also know that she hadn't read it, but she did know from the back flap that it was about twins, but nevertheless, despite all that, it turned out to be one of the best presents I'd ever received, because I read a lot and now, thanks to my sister, I've discovered a wonderful new writer.

Summary: Stunning Characters, Sad Bad Guys, Super Story
Comment: I must admit that I'd never heard of Ken Douglas, that I only bought the book for my sister because of his name, That it was about twins, as my sister pointed out in her review, was a bonus. That it was a thriller, the kind of books I love to read, was a bonus too. But the biggest bonus of all was the fact that I couldn't but the book down. I want you all to know that because I enjoyed the book so much, I today ordered DESPERATION MOON and RUNNING SCARED and if they are anywhere near as good as DEAD RINGER, both my sister and I will be reviewing them here in the very near future.

The story starts out with a murder and ends with one too and the great middle of the book is full of tense, action packed, suspense filled pages. Maggie Nesbitt starts out in trouble and the troubles just seem to keep piling up, but she doesn't quit, doesn't give up. She's a fighter and though the circumstances just seem to get more and more dire, she keeps fighting.

To keep her baby, Maggie takes over the life of her murdered twin. However the killer, one Horace Nighthyde, is a fighter too, is also a man who doesn't quit. He'd killed a woman, now she's alive again, so he sets out to kill her again. Nighthyde is the true tragedy of this story. Life has dealt him bad cards and he only makes matters worse by raising the stakes when he should fold. He blunders through the story, wondering and wishing things could have been different and for some reason you can't help feeling sorry for him. Still, he's a contract killer, so maybe my sympathy was misplaced.

I loved this book. I loved Maggie. I loved Jasmine, the daughter she inherited when she took over her sister's life. I loved Gordon, the gay ex-FBI guy. I loved Gay, the ex-black activist turned hair dresser. And sadly I loved the brothers Nighthyde right up till their untimely ends.
