Title: Financial Statements.xls: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Financial Statements Using Microsoft Excel by Joseph Rubin ISBN: 0-9746368-0-0 Publisher: Limelight Media Pub. Date: 01 March, 2004 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $42.95 |
Average Customer Rating: 3.67 (3 reviews)
Rating: 3
Summary: Practical, but...................................
Comment: the book's focus is very good, but missing is software with sample files and templates. if you like puzzles and crosswords and have lots of time, you'll love this book!
it is precise but to really obtain the best benefit, you have to read it at your keyboard and this is where the sample files and templates would come into play. as a practicing public accountant with a better than most background in excel, I had hoped for more, hence the 3 star rating.
Rating: 4
Summary: Useful, but novices beware
Comment: This book is packed with the kind of tricks and tips that Excel practitioners have come to expect, and like, from Joseph Rubin.
However, some cautionary notes are in order.
First: As with Rubin's other books, the style is technical and the editing is poor. Definitely expect to get bogged down deciphering what the examples mean. You will run into some typos and errors. If you're an intermediate to advanced Excel user, you're mentally equipped to drill past those shortcomings and you will discover lots of useful, powerful material. But if you're an Excel novice, please go elsewhere and raise your Excel IQ before you tackle this book.
Second: a significant portion of the book is devoted to financial statement preparation. So the examples speak far more to accountants than analysts or investment bankers. For instance, a big chunk of the book deals with trial balances
Third: Before you even begin the book, you need to download the sample file and macros at http://www.exceltip.com/xls
The author never explicitly states this -- he just jumps right in on page 1.
Fourth: The sample data were missing from the file that I downloaded. I had to manually input as much of the source data as I could glean from the book's printed tables.
All in all, I rate the book's style maybe 2 stars, but the content is worth 5 stars. I think Rubin's power techniques are amazing and a must-have for serious Excel users.
I am about 1/3 through the book now. I will edit and repost my review, if I come across anything else worth noting.
Rating: 4
Summary: Useful tool
Comment: I found this book to be a useful tool for setting up spreadsheets to do data analysis and financial reporting.
I would recommend this book if you're looking for a concise data tool kit!
