Summary: Tired plots and shallow character development
Comment: It's obvious the guy is astroturfing his own book here. Pick it up used and read it and you'll know the truth.

Rating: 5
Summary: One of the best books I have ever read
Comment: My love for medieval times kept my face buried into Jem Matzan's The Hero the instant I received the book. From the moment one opens the cover, Matzan promises "dragons, dinosaurs, magicians, ghosts," and much more...

The story revolves around an un-named adventurer with no memories of his youth, yet eerily guided by his childhood lust and passion to become a Hero. Haunted by a recurring nightmare and a feeling he has come to call his "Old Friend," the nameless man sets off to Dracheburg Valley on notice of an old poster - recently uncovered in the Adventurers Guildhall. Matzan dips our imagination into the ink of fantasy as he brings to life every place and character. He enlightens our concept of 'medieval magic' to a further extent than ever before - explaining the role of the Universe in trivial ways. Cameos from famous personalities add a touch of humor to this otherwise fast-moving, action-packed book.

Summary: Blows away Feist
Comment: The Hero, as the other reviews say, really is superbly written. The use of language is thoughtful and engaging and the plot is a wonderful "slow boil." It's an imperfect fantasy in that the good guys aren't really that good and the bad guys aren't really that bad. It's very deep and probably not for everyone in that the plot contains some heavy metaphors that deal with some of the most complex and painful aspects of the human mind. The Hero should really be classified as Literary Fantasy.

Another reviewer said this shouldn't be compared to Tolkein and Feist, and he's right. Feist could never think of something as involved and meaningful as this, and most of his books ARE based on RPG's like Betrayal At Krondor and all of the others in that series. They amount to little more than literary sugar. I used to be a huge Feist fan when I was younger, but now my mind hungers for something made for an adult mind... which The Hero is.

I won't give it five stars because it does lack somewhat in length and I thought the bit parts the Marx Brothers had was distracting (although hilarious). But reading this book actually changed the way I think, in addition to being an entertaining read. Skip all those Krondor books and get The Hero; you won't regret it.
