Comment: With the Boer War (1899-1902) looming, sixteen-year-old Chris King, his family, and other Uitlanders (non-Dutch Europeans in the independent Boer republics) are forced to flee from the aggressive Boers. However, Chris is not one to sit on the sidelines when there is something important to do. So, forming an independent company, Chris and his friends of similar age take up arms against the Boer army. With daring and panache, they outwit and outfight the Boers all the way up through the relieving of Ladysmith (February, 1900).

George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) is largely forgotten today, but prior to World War II he had many young fans of his adventure books. Muscular fiction at its exciting best, Henty's stories follow a brave and upright young man through a series of adventures during great historical happenings (usually great happenings of British history). Largely out of step with today's world, this book is nonetheless a cracking good read. So, if you are interested in historical fiction set during the Boer War, I would highly recommend this book to you.
