Comment: Prepare to be sucked into this engrossing story of the reluctant union of two families and the coming of age of a girl whose unyielding resistance to expectations seems to catapult her through life. Anyone who is an admirer of the bluegrass state will relish the rolling hills, horse farms and, of course, the sweet bourbon that saturates this book. Smith's characters will keep you laughing, from venom spewing Cissy, invertebrate George, steadfast Wilda Mae, fervent Grandmother Rosemont to candid and pragmatic Freddie. Patticake seems to unwittingly absorb some of the best and worst qualities of the bunch, throw in her own unique attributes, moods and inclinations and she is, at the very least, impassioned, incorrigible and very funny. Following the characters through a period when both their families and the country is facing adversity is enthralling. I am certain that anyone who picks up this book will find a cozy spot to curl up in and won't put it down until they've finished.
