Summary: The Bloodless Coup d'Etat Called the 2000' Election
Comment: Vincent Bugliosi takes the reader step-by-step through the events of the bloodless coup d'etat known as the 2000' Presidential election. He factually confirms what millions of Americans already knew in their hearts: 5 banana Republicans in black robes on the U.S. Supreme Court conspired with elected state officials in Florida to hand the keys of the White House to George W. Bush.

The decision had been made prior to the fall of 2000' that Vice President Al Gore would lose, and Bush would win -- no matter what. Aging right-wing judges like Sandra Day O'Conner and Antonio Scalia were on the fast-track to retire. They weren't about to go knowing a Democrat was President. Reading this book should be required reading for all Americans, and anyone in the process of becoming an American citizen. The reader will come away understanding that our democracy is far more fragile and vulnerable to corruption than ever previously imagined.

Summary: Tone undermines Betrayal
Comment: I found this book to be very informative and for the most part written in a way that it was easy to understand the complex legal issues surrounding the Supreme Court's decision to stop the counting of votes in Florida and determine the outcome based on their own political biases and other personal considerations - such as not wanting to retire while a "liberal" was in the White House.

However, I was also hoping to find a book that I could forward to friends of mine who wrongly think that what the Supreme Court did was good (because "their man" won), to help them understand how the affirming justices stole the election and violated the Constitution and their oaths to enforce it, while denying the voting rights of every single American. However, Bugliosi is so throughly disgusted with these events that he can't help but use the strongest language possible. This is fine if you're preaching to the choir and your goal is to fire up activism, but is useless if you're seeking conversions.

Note - Al Gore was not my pick either. Regardless of who you wanted to have as President, regardless of what any post-mortum recount demonstrates, your rights and the democratic principles that this country was founded upon were violated by this decision of the court.

Summary: An Excellent Legal Overview
Comment: Reader Douglas Cross, like many conservatives, doesn't deliver delivers the whole truth in his statement that the independent review of journalists found that Bush would have won the election had the selective recounts been completed. The key word here is "selective"; the same journalists also found that had Al Gore done the right thing and requested a statewide recount, he would have won the election. There are many unseemly aspects of the Florida election debacle that conservatives are unwilling to confront. One is the very real fact that thousands of voters, mostly black, were wrongfully identified as felons and denied the right to vote. The company that did the search for these felons was instructed to use the loosest possible guidelines, so if a voter's name came close to that of felon, he was identifed as one. Former felons from other states whose convictions had been discharged were also illegally denied the right to vote in Florida. It is also unconscionable that Katherine Harris, who headed Bush's campaign in Florida did not recuse herself from the entire process; but even worse were the failures of both Clarence Thomas (whose wife served on Bush's cabinet selection) and Antonin Scalia (whose son became the anti-labor chief of the Department of Labor) did not recuse themselves despite very clear conflicts of interest.
