Comment: Aside from the Bible, this is the best book ever written. Victor Hugo has given us the best novel in the history of literature via Les Miserables. I try to read this book at least once a year, and I never get tired of it. Hugo demonstrates the meaning of true grace all throughout the pages of this novel. Moreover, the book is a wonderful account of French 19th century European history (esp. the French judicial and political systems). Hugo has a very descriptive writing style that exceeds most all of the other authors of his day. While this unabridged edition looks like a tremendous amount of reading (1463 pages), you will never realize there are this many pages once you begin to get caught up in the storyline. Hugo, with wonderful style and extravagance builds several storylines that culminate into one overall story. Hugo touches the readers intellect as well as emotions as he describes the depravity of man and the guilt that is often suppressed inside each one of us. Moreover, Hugo paints a wonderful picture of grace through several of his characters (i.e. Javert) that would never be expected to show such grace. Also, Hugo digs deep into the human mind to reveal what lies hidden in the thoughts of many of his characters which adds to the romance, struggles, pains, and emotions of the characters he is developing in the story. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Summary: Easily the most AMAZING novel I've ever read!
Comment: I love the film adaptions and musical of Les Miserables, but they can't even compare to the greatness of this piece of literature. It's such an epic story, covering such topics as justice vs. the law, and ultimate love and self-sacrifice. Everyone can find something to relate to, something to learn from, and something to enjoy in this novel. The characters truly do come alive in this novel, from the center and hero of the story, Jean Valjean, to the minor characters. I particularly was touched by the story of Fantine, a "minor" character but easily my favourite. This character falls from innocence, and eventually makes an ultimate self-sacrifice for her daughter. I found myself unable to put the book down on many a late night, but especially so on the chapters concerning Fantine. Of course, perhaps my love for "classics" and "epics" and "historical romance" may have helped me enjoy the book so, as I know many people who could barely get through the first 20 pages of the 1400 + page novel. Some people may not have the patience to go through the Waterloo part, etc. It is a quite detailed book, and it does go very much "off-topic" a few times. But I still enjoyed every single word. I hope the size of the book won't make people think twice about reading it, it really is best unabridged. I have read the abridged version and it is quite confusing, and you miss several moving scenes. In my own opinion, everyone should read this book, unabridged...and prepare to be amazed!

Summary: A Book that makes you think
Comment: Les Miserables is truly a fantastic book set in the Napoleon era in France. Ex-convict, Jean Valjean, goes through poverty, wealth, love, sadness, and happiness. He tried to forget his past and change himself for a new life while encountering a little girl, Cosette, who becomes like a daughter to him. This book relives the French setting of a person's life, whether it was a rich man or a poor man. It tells the story of many people's lives and how they all relate to every other character in the book. Les Miserables entangled me into the scenes through the sewers of Paris and the Battle of Waterloo because it sounded so real I felt as if I were there, running and fighting alongside of the men. This book also made me stop and think about what just happened because the people and events were all very conflicting. They match up at one point of the story. Victor Hugo really kept me into the book, except when some of the paragraphs went into so much detail it was tempting to just skip over it. But most of the time it was so exciting it made me want to skip the next few paragraphs to see what would happen. Though it took me awhile to read it, I couldn't stop reading and wondering what would happen next.
