Summary: The only guidebook you'll need
Comment: When I bought this book I already had FOUR other guidebooks to Madeira. I knew at a glance, however, that this book was better than the others. It's usefully organized, comprehensive, and packed with excellent color illustrations. Some of the other books I had contained too little detail, some contained too much. This guide was really just right. It is logically divided, for example, there's a section telling you what to do in your first few hours. There are other sections covering each part of the island. Each of these sections contains lists of what you shouldn't miss and lists of other things to see if you have more time, together with good descriptions of each sight. I found these lists to be right on target. Their suggested itineraries fit our needs perfectly, and we used them as guides for each of our trips around the island. As far as levada walks, I found the famous Sunflower Guide to be far too detailed for our needs. This book outlines several walks that were just right. We took three of the walks that the book recommended and found them to be excellent choices. Madeira is a paradise and, with this guide in your pocket, you'll be very well oriented indeed.
