Summary: Compelling Read
Comment: Despite the other less than glowing reviews, I loved this book. It kept me reading and what's more, and what is, to me, the mark of a good book, it kept me thinking about the main character when I wasn't reading it. Is it predictable? Somewhat, but the writing is fresh and incredibly, and sometimes brutally, honest. Frey has an arrogant, holier than thou persona, especially at the end, but I cheer his integrity in the face of so much self-help garbage that is out there. As a memior, it is lacking a reason for the addiction, but that is his main point: he is not a victim of anyone; only he made the choices that he made. If nothing else, this reasoning is refreshing and a great topic for discussion. Are addicts products of their families or is this a cop-out excuse? As for a predictable ending, yes and no--if you can, wait until the end and read about what happens to each of the characters. This is no fairy tale conclusion. Overall, even though I did find him self-aggrandizing, I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

Summary: There is a lesson to be learned.
Comment: First of all, I have to thank James Frey for sharing this book with us. His is a story the likes of which I have never read. It is a comprehensive, heart wrenching, brutally honest account of substance abuse, addiction, self loathing and ultimately redemption. This book should be read by anyone whose life has been touched by any type of addiction. The writing is fantastic, James's uncoquerable spirit is present in every poetic line. I cannot believe he survived some of the things that are described in this book. Many times as I was reading, I had to put the book aside for a moment because it was all too much to take in at one time. Now imagine living like that. The best thing I can say about this book is even if the reader is the most cynical of people, he or she will come away having learned something. I know I did and I won't forget this story for a long, long time. Mr. Frey has such a unique voice and I look forward to anything else he writes.

Summary: frey's little dentist chair
Comment: i've never been addicted to crack, but after reading "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey, my body felt addicted...addicted to something. like a teenage boy afraid of being discovered by his mother while reading a porno magazine, the second i finished AMLP it left my hands. i didn't want to touch it ever again, but something within Frey's words kept my mind thinking about the book. the pace with which Frey tells his harrowing life tale of a 13 year addiction to alcohol and other drugs acts like nitrous oxide while you sit in his dentist chair. that part i'm not kidding about. your stomach will turn, body ache, and face contort as you read this book. but never in one second will you think about putting it down. you might take breaks just as a dentist would to ease the pain, but the satisfaction of finishing this book is like no other. it's a happy ending for one, but not for others and you can bet that the next time you look at yourself in the mirror it will be with honest eyes.
