Rating: 3
Summary: Philosophical background
Comment: I have to agree with Ms. Allen (above) that the title is somewhat misleading: 'Tutoring Matters' is heavy on academically-correct educational philosophy but utterly silent on the matter of tutoring as a business. Not to say this book is worthless to the professional, however; I think this is a valuable addition to the shelf of anyone in the business of education or interested in interpersonal relations, communication, etc. Delicate matters of race, gender, and tutor misconduct are handled in an honest and confident manner, although at times the authors' unerring optimism reads like motivational fodder. The recommended reading sections at the end of each chapter are a nice addition.

Summary: Title Misleading
Comment: I was surprised to find this book very unhelpful in my new tutoring business. It mainly discusses the relationship between the tutorer and tutoree and provides no information on tutoring techniques, etc. A real disappointment!

Rating: 5
Summary: A wonderfully practical, helpful, and informative manual
Comment: This manual is excellent for dealing with possible tutor-tutee or tutor-parent issues. It covers everything, including differences in race, gender, religion, socio-economic status, and sexual orientation. I found it extremely helpful in my tutoring "career," and it has helped me better relate to and motivate my students.
