Summary: Teen Witch
Comment: Teen Witch is helpful for those curious about the foundational beliefs of Wicca. For someone confused about WitchCraft, I believe this book sends a clear message to the learning reader. More geared for those who have questions about the Craft, and for those that have not gotten the right message from the media, however. I read this book correspoding with Scott Cunningham's "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner", and thiswas very helpful, because both seemed to balance out different ideas that might intrigue or confuse the reader. I would have been able to follow the book more if Silver had focused a lot more on the Goddess, instead of continuously referring to Spirit as "God", although I know this obviously was to assure that confused Christian readers would not be on their toes with Goddess based Deity as Satanic practice. I also didn't like how in many parts of the book, Silver made Wicca seem very "Sabrina the Teenage-Witchy". For example, when she was using different teens and their altar layouts as examples of how the practitioner can set up their own, one of the examples she used was a nine year old named Tabitha, who's altar consisted of stuffed animals, and no real reverance for the Goddess and God, as well as the Elements ( or so it seemed to me). She reminded me to much of Tabitha on Bewitched. I did like, however, her focus on Wicca as being a religion based on Love, and I was glad she continuously expressed this. All in all, it was a good beginners guide, even if in some parts it did seem much to maternal, as well as making teens out to be inexperianced baby chicks that need to be fed carefully and very basically.

Summary: Not Wicca
Comment: What RavenWolf is selling in this book is not Wicca. What she's selling is blend of Wiccan-flavored folk magic, new age trends and watered-down Wiccan theology. And hey, if that's what you want your religion to look like, that's great. Good for you. Just don't call it Wicca when it's not.

This book is a decent starting point for the study of folk magic--decent, but far from great. The negative points far outweight the good. Her tone is a bit condescending (teens don't need to be spoken to like children). Her information on Wiccan belief is inaccurate, and her historical info is even worse. She seems biased toward an anti-Christian viewpoint, to the point of telling her readers that the Christians in their lives will probably hate them for their newfound Wiccan beliefs.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. There's nothing said here that you can't also learn elsewhere. This was my first book on witchcraft, and I spent a while unlearning what I learned from it. Please, if you value your time and your money, don't even bother buying it.
