Summary: The story of Mexican American immigration to the U.S.
Comment: When it comes to exploring Our Cultural Heritage in terms fo the various ethnic groups that have immigrated to the United States the story of the Mexican Americans is unqiue for several reasons. First, these are the immigrants who have the shortest distance to travel to reach the United States (I do not think there will be a volume on Canadian Americans in this series). Second, a lot of Mexicans became Americans without moving to the U.S. simply because there were living in territory that was acuired as part of Texas, through the Mexican War, or by the Gadsen Purchase. Third, when the topic of immigration to the U.S. pops up in the news it is invariably about illegal immigration. Fourth, largely because of Mexican Americans it is the Hispanic segment of the American population that is now the largest "minority" in the country.
In this volume for the Our Cultural Heritage series Judy Alter explains how many Mexican Americans are not immigrants but descendants of people who lived in U.S. territory when the land belonged to Mexico and contrasts that with the economic conditions that spurred both legal and illegal immigration by Mexican citizens coming to the U.S. as migrant workers. Alter explores the problems Mexicans have faced in the United States and the activism that this engendered after World War II. The last two chapters in the book are devoted to the traditions, contributions, and achievements of Mexican Americans.
Alter does a nice job of covering all of the basics on the complicated history as well as the current political and social issues regarding Mexican Americans. This book is illustrated with mostly contemporary color photographs, but there are also some historic pictures as well. There are detailed sidebars on topics such as Illegal Immigration and Bilingual Education. The back of the book contains a Time Line that goes from 300 B.C. when the Mayas ruled Mexico to the issues of the 1990s, a Glossary of Terms from activist to visas, and sources For Further Information. Hopefully young students will be able to find all of their various ethnic roots covered in these volumes from Spirit of America.
