Summary: Learned but sentimental formalism
Comment: This book formal strengths--strengths that give it the feel of a book one or two hundred years old--are outnumbered and overwhelmed by its sentimentalism, even Romanticism, and the self-importance it constantly projects. The author seems not to recognize that poetry does not need to be an academic exercise in self-representation. There can be no doubt that the book is learned, but there is little life in it.
