Summary: A good beginner to intermediate introduction to Photoshop
Comment: Photoshop 4 Complete is a clearly written book, with cleanly formatted, easy-to-read text. It is well suited to beginner and intermediate users, with plenty of screenshots of key dialog boxes and diagrams that show the effects of various settings of a given tool or filter. It assumes a basic familiarity with mouse manipulation, and the various types of menus, dialog boxes, etc. found in any application. Everything is presented for both Mac and Windows platforms; although screenshots are Mac-based, differences between platforms are called out where they exist. There is an introductory chapter on the basics of scanning images, which is probably what most beginning and intermediate users will want to do; if you intend to do a lot of scanning, get a book such as Scanner Solutions for more comprehensive coverage. Although the book is not in color, and does not contain any color plates, it includes step-by-step tutorials based on images contained on the included CD-ROM. Therefore, a previous reviewer's head may hurt because he was not using the book as it was intended to be used - in conjunction with the reader's own manipulation of the images in real time. The chapters on color correction, saving and exporting, and Photoshop for the web should also be useful for the average user who wants to put family photos and basic graphics on a webpage. The extensive section containing descriptions of each of Photoshop's native filters is one of the most comprehensive I've seen.

Photoshop books vary tremendously in terms of their intended audience (beginner to power user) and in their page layout (easily read to cramped and busy); this book is aimed at the beginner to intermediate user as an easily-read resource for learning step-by-step basic and some advanced technques - power users need not apply.

Summary: My head still hurts.
Comment: I particularly loved the cheesy black & white image with the caption that read, "The Sphereize filter applied to the Red channel..."
