Summary: overrated butt-kissing
Comment: This book includes too much butt-kissing and paternalism. Sure, Mockbee and his students are helping these people, but they seem a bit too proud of themselves. I wish there was more technical information about the designs, materials, and techniques.

Comment: it's inspiring to see Mockbee's design-built works extended to and enhanced another layer of communities with creative uses of materials.

Summary: Good intentions but...
Comment: Sounded like a good idea, charitable and all, but then I saw the houses--high fashion homes with broken washing machines on the porches--and I began to question the whole premise.
Is this worthwhile charity? Consider the Habitat for Humanity approach, where the client must contribute. Better than giving things to people to "give them dignity". Sorry, but no amount of charity can accomplish that.
And what is being donated? Style? Fashion, that competition among wealthy elitists, is wasted in this context. Advances in building technology? Building a house out of stuff from the dump? The whole concept is reminiscent of those field trips made up of poor urban school children to upscale suburban malls. Beneath an appearance of munificence lurks a core of condescendsion.
On the other hand, he comes across as an idealist, so maybe he deserves the benefit of the doubt.
