Summary: Camelot Revisited
Comment: Of all of them, this is the Kennedy book I think makes the most sense. In it, Camelot is a land where anything goes, and the wives have to figure out how to deal with it all. Sometimes they are successful -- as in Jackie's dealing with Marilyn Monroe -- boy, did she put her foot down on that one. And sometimes they are not -- as in Joan's dealing with Ted's unfaithfulness -- what a sad mess of things. But always, they shine, shine, shine. I enjoyed this book because it neither condemned nor patronized ... it just told a very good story in an appealing way, and made the women very real to me, and very human. I think Jackie would be proud of this book, and certainly Joan should be. Ethel may have a problem with some of it (but then, again, maybe she shouldn't have allowed her kids to set the maid on fire!) I found the whole thing to be so interesting, and even the material about the Cuban Missile Crisis, which could have been a big, fat bore, comes to life here through the eyes of the women. I loved Jackie's little dinner the night of JFK's speech where they all entertained and had chicken and wild rice as if it wasn't the end of the world, and cheap wine too. How funny! What a piece of work this is! Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of serious and tragic moments. But some funny ones, too. Loved it. Loved every nano-Kennedy-second of it. (Had to have it imported. Can't seem to get it in London. What a shame.)

Summary: Taraborrelli's Jackie, Ethel, Joan: Women of Camelot
Comment: The Editor and other reviewers have done an excellent job of reviewing this book, and I will only comment here on a few things. I agree with reviewers that Joan comes out as the hero of the book, but I think that the Kennedy women including Rose tell us something fundamental about the world in which we live. As a man, I consider that almost all of the women of the world deserve a Medal of Honor for the major role they play in civilization - as much as Field Marshalls Montgomery and Slim, whose books I have reviewed at Amazon.com. Joan Kennedy Taylor exemplifies the courage about which John F. Kennedy wrote in Profiles in Courage, although he restricted his book to men. Much of her character is excellently revealed in her 1992 book, the Joy of Classical Music, which the public should ask the publishers to reprint since it is out of print today. Like most women, Joan was under "enemy fire" most days of her life, and she not only survived but triumphed. Her alleged battle with alcoholism is no blemish on her character. The U.S. Veterans Administration (itself under fire with almost constant budget cuts) treats thousands of courageous men and women veterans of Vietnam and earlier conflicts with alcoholism and similar problems every day. Women like Joan bring us the best of classical music and indeed classical civilization. I am indebted to them beyond words.

Summary: DELICIOUS DISH DELICIOUSLY READ
Comment: Just when we thought we knew all there was to know about the Kennedy clan Taraborrelli proves we didn't. Of course, much of what we now discover reads like a tabloid tell-all.
These women had nothing in common save for their last name - soignee Jackie wasn't about to get on a touch football field with athletic Ethel. Shy, later alcoholic Joan, was sandwiched between the two of them.
History? No. Tawdry tattled tales? Yes. If gossip is your meat, it doesn't get any juicier than this - deliciously read by Beth Fowler.
