Title: 50 Baby Bootees to Knit by Zoe Mellor ISBN: 1-57076-224-4 Publisher: Trafalgar Square Publishing Pub. Date: September, 2002 Format: Spiral-bound Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $24.95 |

Summary: I'm disappointed
Comment: As a previous reviewer said, this book does not have fifty different bootie patterns--too many are simply variations on a theme. In addition, much of the photography is very poorly done, with many designs out of focus and/or overexposed to the point of obscuring detail on the knitted item. For these reasons and my belief that the book itself could have been half the size it is, with far fewer pages (large, sparse type on informational pages), and therefore less costly, I would not recommend purchasing this book.
All that being said, there are some cute patterns in the book. I recommend borrowing it from your public library instead.

Summary: One of the best single-topic knitting books
Comment: I wasn't sure about buying a whole book devoted to nothing but baby bootees. But after making several pairs of Mellor's adorable designs, I am hooked! It's true that most of the yarns for the patterns are by Rowan or Jaeger, but most patterns only require one ball of a color or two, so I find them to be a quite economical gift. (And there are plenty of substitutions out there if you follow the listed gauge--I substituted with Tahki and Sirdar for some patterns). The instructions are very well written and concise. I like to photocopy a pattern page for my personal use and carry it with my small bag of yarn and needles--these are very portable projects! Many patterns are similar, but so colorful and well-constructed that I know that now that I have made a pair of Stripy Bootees (they remind me of high-top sneakers!), I can make the Bear or Bunny Slippers without any difficulty. If you like knitting for babies and need something quick, yet detailed and unique, try this book.

Summary: Tricky but adorable designs
Comment: All the designs look so sweet and adorable.
I agree that there seem to be some designs that are variations on the same theme. However, I found this helpful because they are scaled to different sizes, which makes it easier to adapt a style to size.
For my first project I tried the fair isle checkered shoes from the cover. The size was perfect. Although I found a few minor counting errors in the pattern.
The edging instructions produced a very different looking shoe with more of a cuff. If I were to skip the edging I would have the same style shoe as the cover. Also, the edging instructions contain extra eyelets for the ribbon and it wasn't clear how to thread them.
I'm looking forward to trying some of the other bootee designs.
