Summary: exciting Skye¿s Legacy tale
Comment: With the death in 1650 of James Leslie, the Duke of Glenkirk, his wife Jasmine leaves Scotland because she can no longer live at the family estate amidst the memories. Before leaving for England, Jasmine tells her son, the new duke Patrick, that he needs a wife and heirs. Reluctantly and feeling alone, Patrick agrees, but is not sure where to find an appropriate spouse especially since he has isolated himself at Glenkirk from the royal, parliamentary, and Cromwell problems gripping England and Scotland.

While hunting, Patrick notices run down Brae castle where the sole occupant Flanna Brodie shoots an arrow at him. He captures her and returns her to her father. He offers to buy Brae Castle, but instead her father offers Flanna in marriage as his price. Needing a bride and wanting the land, Patrick accepts and they wed that night. They make love and go back to Glenkirk to live. Over the next few weeks they begin to fall in love. However, Flanna needs to help Charles II regain the throne while Patrick believes that Leslies die when they help Stuarts. In spite of their love, can their relationship survive this deep schism?

JUST BEYOND TOMORROW is an exciting Skye's Legacy tale starring a son of DARLING JASMINE. Flanna is an intrepid heroine trapped between her love for her spouse and her loyalty to her king. Though there are character inconsistencies especially with the portrayal of Patrick, the story line is fun for fans of the series and seventeenth century Scottish tales as Bertrice Small's latest novel continues the legend.

Summary: The same old problem...
Comment: This isn't a terrible book, as romance novels go. There certainly have been a lot of worse ones (check out late 1970's ones in a used bookstore for a chuckle.) But it has the same problem that Bertrice Small's books have suffered from for a good decade now-- it simply can't even begin to measure up to her magnificent classics like "Unconquered" and "Skye O'Malley." The plot is flat and insipid, and so are the characters. Patrick Leslie really never seems to have any distinguishing characteristics. Flanna quickly loses any spark she had. The plot consists of them going through the motions and is extremely predictable (you KNOW they'll fall in love, you KNOW they'll have the classic misunderstandings, etc.) Small seems so bored with the whole thing that she doesn't even bother with any sexual tension! (Come on, she's been writing since the late 70's! She knows perfectly well that by having the characters get into bed within hours of meeting, the author has thrown away a great chance to develop things.) There are romance writers (Amanda Quick and Johanna Lindsey spring to mind) who use a lot of cliches, but still manage to develop interesting stories. Small is not one of them. If all Bertrice is going to do from now on is churn out one boring book after another, I wish she'd stop writing

Summary: This was just bad
Comment: I have only read this book once, because i just can not bring myself to pick it up again and suffer. i got so tired of the female lead going on about how she didn't want to be known as the " do naught duchess". It got really irritating. And Patrick was nothing like any of Ms. Small's former male leads. i kept hoping for a brick to hit him and knock him silly. This will be the only book of Ms. Small's i'll never purchase new. there was no adventure, no spark, nothing but my own determination to finish this book.
