Summary: Great test prep, but be careful
Comment:

I rated the exam cram for NT Server very high. I cannot, in good faith, do the same here. While this is still a great book for test preparation, there are far too many typos and outright errors to give this a better rating.

Most of the errors are not significant enough to confuse anyone with NT experience (which is highly recommended for MCSE certification anyway). For example, anyone who has gone through the installation documentation will know that there is no /OS option for WINNT (it is /OX) despite it's inclusion in chapter 3.

Overall, these types of typos/errors are more an annoyance than a showstopper, but they should be mentioned. There are a few that could confuse those who are not familiar with NT, but not enough to bring about a failing score on the MCSE exam. If you are diligent, this book will get you a passing score. My advice: get the exam cram pack so you can take the practice exams. I found at least as valuable as the books.

Summary: This book is almost indispensable for NT4WS Exam preparation
Comment: Yesterday I passed NT4 Workstation with a score of 882. In the months before the test I read QUE's NT4WS Exam Study Guide, the MS Press NT4 Resource Kit, and the MS Press Technical and Administrative Support Book/CD-ROM sets. And countless braindumps. But in the weeks before the test, it was this book that I found myself perusing endlessly. The organization is excellent, and all the material is exceptionally well-presented and explained, with the right level of detail for exam-prepping. Also, the quizes at the end of each chapter, along with the sample test at the back, were outstanding, and very close to many actual exam questions. And when I compare this book with the others I used, this one had the closest correlation to the actual questions on the exam. That makes this book an excellent value. But there's more. Of all the material I read, this book had the clearest explanations for many items such as ARC names, the boot process, and troubleshooting boot errors. The cram sheets in the front were also great. In sum, no other book I used had such a practical, clear, focused approach to exam preparation. For anyone interested in passing the exam, this is the best possible overall review. For professional development the other books I used were excellent, possessing depth and breadth. But for passing the exam, this is the place to start and stop (albeit with other books and braindumps in between). Braindumps are the best exam prep, but this books gives you the intellectual framework for deep understanding as well. My only suggestion would be more visual aids since we remember visually better than verbally. For instance several mind-maps I made the day of the exam were very helpful for remembering various winnt.exe/ options, and for troublshooting options as well. But this would only make a great book even better. I'm studying for the Server exam now, and also plan to spend the last two weeks before that exam in detailed study of their Server book, as well as the ones for Server in the Enterprise, TCP/IP, and Networking Essentials.

Summary: The perfect companion for passing the NT Workstation Exam
Comment: Ed Tittel and company hit the nail on the head with this book. An easy book to read over the weekend before your test. While a good portion of the information contained in this book was not covered on my exam (which I passed on the first try with a score of 833), seven or eight of my 30 questions appeared almost word for word in the Exam Prep Questions section! A word of caution, however. I seriously doubt you can pass the certification exam using only this book, unless you have significant hands-on experience with NT Workstation. I used the New Riders book (ISBN 1562059181, Five Stars!), and am currently studying for Enterprise using Alan Carter's windows NT 4.0 MCSE Study Guide (ISBN 0764530879, I just finished chapter 12, VERY solid so far). The Exam Cram books should be required reading for anyone who wants to pass any Microsoft exam on the first try. Good luck to all aspiring MCP and MCSE candidates. With this book, either the New Riders book or Alan Carter's book, and some self confidence, YOU WILL PASS!
