Summary: Funny, Fresh and Entertaining
Comment: It's about time!! "Globetrotter Dogma: 100 Canons for Escaping the Rat Race" is a refreshing and highly entertaining book. Too many travel writers take themselves and their personal "voyages of discovery" much too seriously, resulting in turgid compendiums of pseudo-inspirational homilies about the wonders of travel. Northam's book avoids this trap by offering his candid anecdotes, insights and observations compiled from years of globetrotting in a fun, self-effacing and engaging manner. Not everything is rosy in Northam's world, and he presents his free-flowing observations with an honesty and frankness borne of experience. Northam occasionally rails against the conformity imposed by our mainstream existences and extols travel as a liberating and epiphanous method to counteract society's creeping malaise, but his manner never feels preachy or heavy-handed. One can sense his intense passion for travel and appreciate that Northam truly wishes that everyone could share even a few of his many incredible and life-altering adventures. The book's format is very user-friendly because one can enjoy it equally reading it cover-to-cover or flipping through it randomly and finding a funny, entertaining or thought provoking canon on every page.

Summary: If you need help , you will not find it here
Comment: When I decide to buy a book, I almost always rely on reviews of other readers to help me decide if I want to purchase it or not. This was the same for this book. The surprise was when I found my self so out of tune with everyone else. Everyone else Liked it, while I did not find it at all useful. Going around the world is a relatively serious undertaking, and I was looking for some pointers. This book had none. It was more of road impressions written in a non-imaginative style. I would borrow it from a library or buy it used rather than pay USD10 plus shipping for it. The author himself said his earlier books contained the nuts and bolts of how to travel while this one adopts a different style. If you are like me.... preparing ... this is not the book for you.
