Summary: STUNNING IMAGES, BUT AT TIMES THE TONE WILL GIVE YOU PAUSE..
Comment: I've been wearing locks for over 2 years, and do so simply because I wanted to wear my natual hair in a flattering, manageable way that honors its texture and the sense of pride I have celebrating my unique African-American features: the way some of the wearers come across in this book is that people who choose to wear locks for these reasons are ignorant frauds, intent on picking and choosing from an honored way of life simply to seem "down". Is it a problem if people like the way they look and want the dreads for that reason? Do we all have to shun soap/shampoo/locticians/any appearance of uniform size to be "real"? The look may have originated with the Rastas, but just because you're not Rasta when you grow them doesn't mean that you're mocking the way of life or that you don't have a bond with your locks, just like those who wear relaxers don't necessarily want to be white or hate themselves. The overall arrogant, pious "My locks are more sacred than thou's" tone offended me when I thought it would re-affirm the beauty I find in dreads. All in all, a great coffee table book for the photos (especially of Keith Hamilton Cobb---AAHHH SOOKIE SOOKIE NOW!!!) and the skimming of history, but look elsewhere for true dread brotherhood (and sisterhood).

Summary: A sword for all true dreads.
Comment: I live in Brisbane, Australia. I am 1/4 Greek, 1/4 Danish, 1/4 English and 1/4 Scottish. I come from a strict but loving Christian home. I have dreads.
I don't have dreads for fashion, nor to prove a point or gain spiritual enlightenment. I have dreads because I like them.
This book is a weapon for all people who are looked down upon and called 'smelly' or 'dirty' for the simple reason that they have chosen to stop brushing their hair. My hair has never been healthier since I gave it its freedom. I show this book to anyone who is interested in my hair, and to anyone who tries to convince me that it is dirty, unhealthy, smelly, unattractive, evil, etc etc.
This book proves to me that God made our hair to be naturally beautiful. I sometimes find it hard to believe I used to cut my hair every four weeks and brush it and gel it whenever it didn't do what I wanted it to.
People sometimes try to tell me that I am only growing dreads to become like Bob Marley, and that its 'just a phase.' They fail to understand what dreads are really about, natural beauty and individualism. My dreads will never look like anyone elses in the world, and each lock is like a finger print upon my head.
Read this book, study the pictures and then dream of a freedom that knows no bounds.
One Love.

Summary: Beautiful People
Comment: As a locked hair style wearer and natural hair care provider I simply had to have this book. I mainly ordered this book to be used as a conversation piece in my natural hair salon. Well, this book is exactly that! The pictures and stories of people from different countries, nationalities and walks of life enlightened all of my clients who have read it. "Dreads" takes the reader into a whole new world about the beautiful style of locked hair.
One can clearly see that Dreadlocks doesn't necessarily mean unkept and dirty hair. There are images of the Rasta's (those whose locks have formed without any or little manipulation) as well as images of individuals who chose to carefully cultivate their head of locks. I find the images/photographs to be captivating and the articles to be enlightening. If you are into natural hair styling, photgraphy or just simply Locks then owning a copy of "Dreads" is an absolute must.
