Comment: I have just received a copy of Xam's "Educational Media Specialist Library" study guide (ISBN 1581970226), and I want to express my disappointment with the quality of this book. The physical condition of the book is of poor quality because the text is blurry. The more serious issue, however, is the poor quality of the content of this book. It appears that there is no information in this book after the mid 1990s. This means that critical legislation, such as No Child Left Behind and the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Program are not even addressed in this book.
Also, beginning on page 3 and continuing on others, the book Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs (1988) is repeatedly referred to. What this study guide does not tell us is that the 1988 version of Information Power has been superceded by the 1998 edition, which is called Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning. It is critical that students preparing for the Praxis II speciality exam in the school library media field be knowledgeable of this 1998 edition because it introduces nine information literacy standards that were not included in the earlier edition (and makes other key modifications). I am appalled that this study guide fails to mention this entirely!
Furthermore, this book was obviously culled from something that was written specifically for Florida's library media specialists, therefore much of the information included in this book is irrelevant to the rest of us in the other 49 states.
I purchased this book for inclusion in our library's collection because we have a School Library Media Certification Program at our college. I was considering requiring the book as a text for one of our courses, but now that I am aware of its poor quality, outdated information, and focus on Florida I will not use it as a text nor will I recommend it to any of the 40+ students in our program.
I would like to urge the publisher to update this book as soon as possible so that those who purchase the book will actually be getting accurate, helpful information that will prepare them for the exam.
