Summary: Evan Marshall, you've done it again...A GReeeeat Book!
Comment: Evan Marshall: I just had to let you know again, I bought your first book 16-step program to write a novel, and am very happy to say I've enjoyed it again. Your Workbook Plan was a great follow-up to your first novel writing book...I only wish you would come out with a followup software program...I would be the first one to buy it. Please keep up writing these how-to wonders...and thanks again....I bought Storycraft software and I'm sad to say I got caught with a worthless piece of software ..SAVE YOUR MONEY, and buy Evan Marshall's 2 writing books.

Summary: The Marshall Plan for Novel Writing is a Must Have Manual.
Comment: The Marshall Plan for Novel Writing is a great book for the beginning author as well as for the more seasoned writer. Practical advice on how to set up a writing area, time management, and genre definitions gives the writer a toe-hold on this crazy occupation. Mr. Marshall continues to instruct the author on how to develop characters, how to interweave plot lines, and how to master action, summary, and dialogue. A section on editing is a must for first time authors. Mr. Marshall concludes with the all important marketing strategy. Even though I'm no longer a beginning author, I found that the section on proposal writing and approaching agents and editors valuable. It didn't hurt me to review character development, action and dialogue one bit! I have ecommednded The Marshall Plan for Novel Writing to students in my creative writing classes and to new authors for whom I do editing. It will help them and, ultimately, me. Authors are advised to put this book on the top of their reference list and study it diligently.

Summary: Good ideas but
Comment: First, this book is mainly about PROCESS - which is very good adn practical - but also has a lot of good information on fiction writing in general.

This book is for you if you're writing a story with a complex plot (such as political or technological thrillers), many storylines/subplots, and/or lots of characters. In other words, if you have a lot to keep track of, this is a good method that will keep your novel organized and on track.

However, if your storyline is more straightforward, contains just one subplot or none at all, and/or focuses on just a few central characters, this method requires far too much "record-keeping" (or what I call "the writing before the writing"). For these kinds of novels, I recommend the streamlined method in "You Can Write a Novel" by James V. Smith, Jr. instead.

As I said, it's a good book, but its usefulness depends very much on the kind of novel you're trying to write.
