Summary: Poor Farm Road
Comment: After reading the first two pages of Poor Farm Road by Richard Dowis, I knew I was in for an exciting ride. Set in a small Southern town in the late fifties, the story begins with the untimely death of a young pregnant white woman and then propels you through a provocative plot, with race relations, love and sex deftly woven into the fabric. With nearly as many twists and turns as the fictitious Poor Farm Road itself, the story captures the reader immediately and maintains its grip with a full plate of engaging characters who are so well defined that the reader becomes awash in a sense of familiarity. In Poor Farm Road each character plays a crucial role in setting the mood and then accelerating the story to a surprising and emotional conclusion. Dowis does an excellent job keeping the reader guessing. When you think you've got it figured out, you don't. Written by someone who obviously understands the English language, every word of Poor Farm Road has a purpose and that purpose is to draw the reader in and to not let go until the end. Upon reading the final page, I found myself hoping for a sequel. How 'bout it Mr. Dowis?
