Summary: Helping beginning readers recognize the great letter "L"
Comment: I go to the library a lot but, no, this particular volume in the "Alphabet Friends" series by Cynthia Klingle and Robert B. Noeyed is about "Leila at the Library and the Letter L." This series consists of twenty-six 24-page volumes, which each devoted to a single letter of the alphabet in order to give beginning readers a fun way of mastering letter recognition. "Leila at the Library and the Letter L" tells of a young girl who goes to the library to learn all about things that begin with the letter "L." Throughout the book such words are highlight on each page and have a small rebus drawing appearing overhead. However, not all of the words beginning with "l" are highlighted, so that young readers will be inspired to read the book on their own and find more examples. The left hand page has lines of simple text while the right offers a color photograph.

Klingel and Noyed want young children to learn how to read these books for themselves. The start of the book introduces readers to both the capital "L" and the lowercase "l" as well as the idea that the letter can appear at the beginning of a word like "lamp," in the middle of a word like "island," or at end of a word like "baseball." In the back of the book young readers will find columns of other such words as well as Fun Facts about leopards and lions and llamas (oh my), as well as suggestions for books appropriate to their level on those three animals as well. I like the way Klingel and Noyed provide a way for beginning readers to continue improving their reading skills by building on what they have learned here.
