Summary: A must read for those with a heart for mission!
Comment: This book is a very thought provoking read that will leave you asking yourself what your real motives are in wanting to help or having compassion on the worlds poor.
The questions that the book raises have really made me think seriously about why I really have a heart to be a missionary, and what I really hope to achieve by going and 'helping'.
Why do we REALLY think the poor are poor? If we're honest do we think it's really their own fault? Is lack of education to blame or politics or are there other issues involved? Do they really need our 'pity'? In trying to 'help' who are we doing it for, them or us? Who gets the glory, us or God?
This book has opened my eyes to a much more realistic look at the worlds poor and realistic ways of helping. There are some examples of how individuals and churches have tried to 'help' when in doing so they have caused more damage than help.
YES the poor of the world definately want and need our help, but whatever way we endeavour to do that, they do not want our pity, or for us to think that we are going to be their 'saviour'. They want to be empowered to help themselves. We don't have all the answers that we think we do. We have the means to help them, and after all that is God's command to the church, to help the poor and needy.
I love this book and would highly recommend it as a valuable tool to anyone who seriously has a heart for mission or a desire to help.
Well done Peter Meadows for such an honest and refreshing book!
