Summary: An insult to Rory!
Comment: I can't believe just how bad this is. It is badly written, the photo's are blurred and you come away wondering if Rory is just a sideman to the author. There is almost nothing about Taste and you'd be forgiven for thinking that Rory was, in fact born in France. The book mentions several times some idiot who jammed with Rory as if anyone cares (lots of people jammed with Rory-you'd need a whole book to name them). Really important facts like what Rory ate(!) are sprinkled through the chapters and how Rory wanted to move to France(yeah, sure) and you come away feeling insulted for buying this tripe and making such a non-author some money and annoyed because Rory deserves better than this. I know, it's a cliche from an Englishman, but only a Frenchman could mess up an oppertunity to write about the greatest guitarist that ever lived.

Summary: Not worth reading
Comment: I think Rory deserves better and I just hope his brother ends up writing the definitive biography because the Coghe book was downright horrible. I hope it remains out of print in its present form.

Coghe did not give the world the story of Rory Gallagher. He gave the world the story of Coghe and 'how he fluttered around the flame that was the light of Rory'. I came away from the book knowing nothing about Rory except that each of his remastered CDs has 2 'bonus tracks'. The book seems to be a moveable feast after the concerts. I couldn't care less what Rory ate; I wanted to know about his art. How did he write his songs? How did he structure the songs of the old Blues Masters? Why was he an apparent loner? What was he looking for?

His life and death deserve more than knowing that a note from Bob Dylan was by his side when he died. The book is nothing but a self-serving scrapbook of Jean-Noel Coghe. A true biographer would have mentioned in passing that he met Rory Gallagher- not include picture after picture of himself with Rory. What a pompous @#$! His insults to the Irish people were too much. I do not think he consulted any of the references that he mentions in the end of the book. The flowery prose was right up there with that of the National Enquirer. A Rory biography in the hands of Peter Guralnick ( Last Train to Memphis) or Robert Palmer (Deep Blues) would do justice, but not this 'stick and paste' job.

I hope to one day pay my respects at Rory's grave. He was a great artist and deserves better. I would've cut off my little finger to have seen him perform his art. I will be waiting for a better book. In the meantime, I slam this one on the fluttering star-struck moth of Coghe. May he hang his head in shame over his treatment of this man.

Summary: How To Be A Decent Human Being And A Genius Guitar Player.
Comment: This book describes to me the kind of Human Being Rory Gallagher really was. There is information here that I certainly had never known about Rory, having been a fan all my life, and of course being a fellow Cork Man myself. It appears Rory had attracted a lot of attention from other Rock Blues musicians like Muddy Waters,Albert Collins,Jerry Lee Lewis whom he did some live session work for on some of their recordings,Bob Dylan wanted his services and The Stones also had him play on one of their albums.John Lennon greatly admired Rory, and they were great accuaintences. There are great stories to read in this book, and it is a must for any Rory Gallagher fan.He had achieved almost everything in his 20s.Surely he had a whole lot more to contribute, unfortunately it was not to be.This is an exellent book for giving an insight into the kind of life and Person Rory Gallagher really was.Go out and get yourself a copy before its all sold out.
