Title: The Goblin Companion: A Field Guide to Goblins by Terry Jones, Brian Froud ISBN: 1-85793-795-3 Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Pub. Date: 25 April, 1996 Format: Hardcover |
Average Customer Rating: 4.67 (6 reviews)
Rating: 5
Summary: If only there'd been a Cottington in "Labyrinth"....
Comment: ...Then this would be an ideal addition to the "Cottington Archive" series of books Including the Pressed Fairy Book, Pressed Fairly Journal, and Strange Stains & Mysterious Smells (all with co-conspirator and Monty Python alumnus Terry Jones) and Froud's solo contribution the Fairy Album. Like Strange Stains, the Goblin Companion offers whimsical Froud art accompanied by short comedic blurbs by Terry Jones, with these particular vignettes suggesting that the Goblin world, while distinct from our own, offers a humorous reflection of "Ungoblin" society through its depictions of goblin religion, politics, sports, and cooking. If you're a fan of the earlier books in the Cottington series, Monty Python, or the Labyrinth movie, The Goblin Companion will provide ample giggling and be a welcome addition to your library.

Summary: Interesting book, but not Froud's best
Comment: Like Brian Froud's other book, Faeries, The Goblin Companion is written like a field guide. This time, however, it is limited to the goblins, and it is written more in terms of short stories and interesting tidbits then an actual "field guide." Don't expect the breathtaking paintings and art found in the faeries books--the Goblin Companion is mainly full of quick sketches and gritty ink-and-watercolor drawings. It's a fun, whimsical picture book, but it's mostly just something to buy if you are either obsessed with goblins (like myself) or with Brian Froud. Otherwise, it is mediocre and gets boring quickly.
Interesting Note: Although this book doesn't make any mention of the film anywhere, all of the art for The Goblin Companion is basically concept art for the movie Labyrinth. Look carefully and you will see many of the goblins he sketches and writes about brought to life in the movie.
Rating: 5
Summary: Great book, but rather odd...
Comment: A splendid blend of hilarious text and even-more-hilarious art, The Goblin Companion is great for the accomplished goblinologist, on for the dedicated fan of the movie Labyrinth.
