Summary: Review by Jeff Rubens in the Magazine "The Bridge World"
Comment: Yesterday, we would have said that a compilation of this kind was virtually impossible. Yet here it is. Using a standard bidding framework, the author analyzes every sequence, competititive and non-competitive, limited to four definitive actions or reaching game. The information content is staggering.
The final bid in each sequence is described by range of strength, possible distributions, hand orientation, and, through a system of footnotes, plausible variant treatments.
The organization is so clever that it is possible to read through some parts of the book. However, ...(it is) ...intended as a reference book. Who might want to use it? Students, even beginners, can find their errors or clear up confusion. Intermediate players can get help in forming
partnerships...Experts might locate new ideas. ..We are sure of one thing: We were right to think that this book is virtually impossible to write.

Summary: Do you need a dictionary?
Comment: I heard many good words about this book before I purchased a copy, not to mention I enjoyed reading Alan Truscott's other bridge books. However, I have to say that I am somewhat disappointed about this one. As a reference book that clearly explains the meaning of the first four bids in uncontested and competitive auctions, the book has its merit. The problem is, it covers only a fraction of the bidding sequences in real life. This book, IMHO, is best for those who are interested in developing a bridge software. In fact, the format of this dictionary looks like exactly being written for that purpose.
