Summary: Stunning nature photography
Comment: The book contains a well-balanced mix of grand vistas and intimate macro shots. Ernst covers the famous icons of landscape photography we're all familiar with: Yosemite Valley and Half Dome, the giant sequoias, Mount Hood, Monument Valley, the slot canyons of the Southwest etc. Some of them are standard signature shots, like Yosemite Valley from Inspiration Point, but others are covered in a new and refreshing way. There is one image of a redwood grove taken with the Pentax 6x7 and a 35mm rectilinear fisheye that is particularly haunting: towering trees partially hidden in the mist and bathed in an unearthly orange glow. Another unforgettable image is of Upper Yosemite Falls and Half Dome at sunrise: the water looks like liquid fire forced out of the rocks by a huge explosion. Exquisite macro shots provide a counterpoint to the landscape images. Ernst covers a wide variety of macro subjects: flowers, leaves, rocks, sand patterns, shells, pine cones etc. I have two favorites: a picture of a lone fireweed in a sea of horsetail grasses, and a picture of a blazing red madrone log in the surf. Fantastic use of color in both photos. Ernst loves waterfalls and sunsets, and there is a fair share of both. My favorite waterfall pictures are closeups of water and rock, the water taking on an unearthly blue (long exposures and reflected light from the blue sky above). What I find particularly amazing is that Ernst took all these pictures over a period of less than a year. That is quite an achievement, considering it took David Muench half of his life to take the pictures in "American Portfolio!" In fact, "Wilderness Reflections" reminds me of David Muench's work in several ways. It's not that Ernst uses Muenchesque techniques such as extreme wide angles with prominent foregrounds--maybe it's the masterly use of color and an ability to portray wilderness in an almost palpable way. Looking at the photos makes you want to reach out and touch whatever is portrayed. The photos are straightforward and honest. They speak to the viewer directly, on an almost instinctive level. Maybe it's because they make us realize that we're a part of it--nature, the grand scheme of things, the big and the small. In his foreword, Ernst underlines the importance of preserving America's wild places, and after looking through "Wilderness Reflections," we shouldn't need any further motivation to do our share
