Summary: Brilliant! One cannot put it down.
Comment: "Comparisons are odious," so my grandfather used to say. Perhaps, but they are often extremely helpful in making a point. Patrick Reardon's first book, Christ in the Psalms, is unlike this his second. The scope of this latter work is broader, encompassing all the major biblical characters (not merely the Psalms), the style is not quite as academic, and the writing even more engaging. Both books are brilliant and necessary, but this one, unlike the first, can be read at a single sitting and is less demanding on the reader. Both books are rich sources of information, anecdotes, exegesis, and sermon material.
What I like about Reardon's new book is that it is so interesting to read. It has the distinction of being one of those rare books on the Bible that one does not want to put down. Reardon is a first class exegete, one of the very best modern interpreters of the biblical text. He can take any biblical story and make it interesting and relevant. He has a complete grasp of the scholarly issues, but also makes full use of the Christian tradition to create a rounded picture of each story that he tells. Reardon interprets the Bible as an Orthodox Christian, and for that he makes no apologies, which is refreshing amidst others who trip over themselves to apologize for their perspective. This is a beautiful book, a great book, one of the most enjoyable reads in a long time. It will inspire, challenge, and sharpen the minds all Christians. Regardless of how well you think you may know your Bible, Reardon will open it up for you in a way that is completely new. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
