Rating: 4
Summary: Better than expected travelogue
Comment: The quantity of the photos was unexpected in a travel book which is otherwise rather cheaply produced. They enrich the volume immensely, and the main regret is that they were not in color or of better quality. Although the author's political views and running commentary of opinion about modern French literature is a distraction, overall the volume is a good read and provides an interesting insight into this little known region. As a recent traveler in Transylvania, I found that the book brought back many happy memories.

Rating: 5
Summary: An excellent, unusual travelogue
Comment: This is almost what I would describe as a "political travelogue," since the author goes so far beyond the usual sights-and-smells one would expect in such a book.

The author takes us around Romania and Moldova, stopping at representative spots along the way to point out historical, cultural, and political landmarks. It is refreshing to hear things from the point of view of another European (the author is French), although the author's pro-socialist leanings were tiresome after a while. It is also interesting to hear some of the "other side" of the 1989 revolution (or, as the author points out, what some Romanians call the "so-called revolution"), since so many in the western world simply assume that all eastern Eurpoeans remain happy about the changes they've experienced.

The only real disappointment in this book is the photographs. What could have been stunning, beautiful images are reduced to barely-viewable half-tone blobs; the photo quality of the average daily newspaper is far superior. Perhaps the publisher might consider abandoning this waste of ink and paper in favor of a separate glossy color insert.

Overall, a very interesting book for those interested in Romania, or in the post-revolution goings-on in eastern Europe in general.
