Summary: What you need to know--in a way you can understand.
Comment: This is a superb book, not only for what it covers but for the clear and reasoned way the author explains things. There are plenty of computer books, like the Real World series, that take things that are inherently complex and make them incomprehensible. Mastering Digital Printing takes a different approach by telling you the state of the art and what you need to know, while explaining this in layman's terms.
What I especially like is the common sense approach he takes to issues like color management and permanence. People would be well advised to take his advice, enjoy making prints and remember that Giclee is just a synonym for expensive inkjet print.
The only thing I question is the point made on pg. 185 that you should be concerned that images stored on CDRs will not be accessible in the future. Its true that SyQuest drives have gone by the wayside. But CDs are ubiquitous and there will be ample opportunity to transfer files to whatever comes along, long before the last CD or DVD drive dissapears.

Summary: Mastering Digital Printing: Subject Mastered !
Comment: This new book represents a uniquely detailed description and explanation of digital printing technology as it pertains to the world of fine art and what might be termed art photography. For artists working with digital technology as their chosen medium, this work provides more than sufficient explanation to enable the artist to intelligently work through all the issues involved with digital printmaking and digital output technology. Whether the artist is doing (or wants to do) his own prints, or is looking at a commercial digital printmaker, this work provides the understanding to do either or both with a rational, thought-through approach.
And furthermore, this book offers a wealth of detail and information for others, be they collectors of fine art, commercial printmakers, or others in the fine art community, most specifically including museum and gallery personnel. And to photographers of all description, it provides a fine understanding of the new digital printing processes, and their uses in the various levels and types of photography. All around, a hugely useful book.

Summary: Not Good Enought
Comment: When I first started to read this book I was really impressed. Then I kept trying to find specific information that I could use. There is very little. A good book for history and hype, but there are better books for useful knowledge. I would suggest Kieran's Photoshop Color Correction.
