Summary: The Best Book I've Read About Stuttering
Comment: John's book is absolutely brilliant and so easy to read. He has so much insight into the causes of stuttering. He believes (and I agree with him) that stuttering is not just a speech problem but it is a system which comprises of several factors which include our perceptions (eg. how we view ourselves and other people when we speak) our beliefs and our emotions (eg our fears about expressing ourselves to other people). I reckon if anyone has any questions about the cause of or solution to stuttering, they'll find the answers in this book!
I have stuttered for over 30 years but during the past 3 years have greatly benefitted from being part of the McGuire Programme, which uses John's Hexagon as part of its teaching. What has really inspired me the most in this book is reading the stories of several people who have actually completely and permanently disappeared stuttering from their lives, a concept I had previously thought impossible. His book has given me real hope that one day I too, and I'm sure many others, can completely disappear stuttering from our lives. Thank you so much John for writing this book.

Summary: Way More Than What I Expected
Comment: Words cannot explain how much this book has affected me! It really kicked my butt into gear and has inspired me to do something about my stuttering. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The only problem I have with the book is the title--I think it does not do the book enough justice. It is more than just a book on getting over your fears of public speaking. It will lead you to a whole new way of thinking about your stuttering. Since reading the book I have noticed more confidence in myself and that has made my speech better. In a bizarre kind of way after reading through the book I almost feel "proud" to be a PWS (person who stutters). Definitely a first! We are indeed a special lot and those that have conquered their stuttering (whose stories you will read about in the book) have a lot to be proud of. I have also found the resources and book references that John Harrison provides to be extremely helpful as well.

Summary: Changing Your Hexagon
Comment: I am a McGuire graduate (for people who stutter) and part of the McGuire Program is about changing your hexagon. John Harrison developed this theory. He identified certain components of oneself and if all these components functioned in the positive, fluency improved. These components were intentions, behaviours, emotions, physical state, perceptions and beliefs. These components John grouped into a Hexagon and it became known as "Harrison's Hexagon."
This is an excellent book. Not just for stutterers but for anyone who enjoys self-improvement. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
