Summary: Play your way to leadership
Comment: In this age of incredible technological advances and whirlwind pace of change, many business leaders seem to be looking for "e-solutions" to some pretty fundamental business issues, apparently forgetting that fundamental issues are best addressed with fundamental principles. In Go for the Green, Dr. Sanders presents an insightful, yet eminently practical guide for getting solidly in touch with the fundamental issue of leadership. Aptly subtitled, "Leadership Secrets from the Golf Course," the book cleverly uses golf as an allegory for illustrating the challenges and frustrations that leaders face as they seek to "play the course of business." More importantly, Dr. Sanders goes beyond most books on leadership by providing an excellent array of useful techniques for increasing leadership effectiveness. He also offers some new ideas and ways of thinking about leadership. For example, we have long made the distinction between management and leadership. In today's business environment, good leaders must also be good managers. The "secret" is to know when to be manager, and when to be leader.
To articulate a compelling vision of the future is critical, but not sufficient. To devise a sound strategy for achieving the vision is critical, but not sufficient. To enroll and equip the workforce to diligently and collaboratively implement the strategy is critical, but not sufficient. Dr. Sanders reminds us that this is the essence of leadership. Further, these are not discreet events, but rather elements of a continuous process; and truly effective leaders understand that different skill sets are required at various stages of the process.
If you want to improve your business game (and perhaps your golf game, as well), join Dr. Sanders in this interesting, enlightening, informative, and often entertaining trip through the world of leadership. Learn to use his tips and techniques to reduce your business handicap as you play the "holes" on his challenging course. You don't have to be a golfer to benefit from this book; anyone seeking to improve their leadership effectiveness can profit from its lessons. But remember: just as your golf game (or any other skill, for that matter) won't improve without practice, your effectiveness as a leader will only improve to the extent that you put the lessons into practice. So don't just read the book, implement the "how-to's."
Great book; interesting and easy reading; comfortable style.

Summary: Great Read!
Comment: Go for the Green, Leadership Secrets from the Golf Course is a great book for business people at all levels. I found it to be well-written by a pro and loaded with practical information for the busy manager. It's organized in a manner that's easy to read; I found I could pick it up and put it down without losing my train of thought. Note that this book is "The Front Nine." I look forward to "The Back Nine" and more solid advice from an author that marries golf with his dedication to sound leadership practices. Go for the Green is a super investment for leaders that are serious about their work.
