Summary: Entering Arthur's Room
Comment: Arthur, a young cerebral palsy victim, is overprotected by an affluent family in a vintage brownstone house that essentially serves as his prison. Laid in St. Paul between the two World Wars, the story tells of his enforced seclusion and of his struggle to give expression to all that lies within him. His sister, also stifled by a domineering mother, learns to comprehend his efforts to speak and even to record them.
Author Cynthia Davidson Bend has worked extensively in helping cerebral palsy victims to communicate, and two of the poems attributed to Arthur are actually the creations of her real life students. If she is able to look into the hearts of those afflicted by the disorder, she is also able to chronicle the development of Arthur's sister. The young girl's perception of her world is transformed by her growing understanding of all that lies in Arthur's room.
