Summary: Truths of Ancient Persia
Comment: Hadidi-Guilani's book is a challenging, though rewarding examination of the culture of ancient Persia---the area now comprised of Iran and parts of Iraq. Challenging not only because it is written in French, but also because Hadidi-Guilani's approach is decidedly opinionated, though not, it is well to say, far from the mark. Coming as he does from a mixed European-Middle Eastern background, he brings to bear the outlook and cultural baggage of both traditions, both of which thoroughly inform his view of the reign of Ashurbanipal, in particular. Hadidi-Guilani displays a remarkably relativistic outlook, and perhaps his focus on the cultural, as opposed to the political is the one drawback to this otherwise encyclopedic and informative tome. Hard to come by though this book is, and a difficult read for those lacking the requisite background, it is nonetheless a rich and rewarding book for those possessed of a working knowledge of French and an even passing interest in the subject.
