Summary: Excellent, original, modern, well-written
Comment: This introduction is very original in the selection and sequence of topics it covers - systems of linear equations, error analysis, least squares, nonlinear systems, symmetric eigenvalue problems, three-term recursions, interpolation and approximation (including Bezier splines and B-splines), large systems and numerical integration. Notably, the second chapter contains an excellent introduction into the topics of conditioning and stability (well illustrated with nice figures), and, just to mention one example, the numerical intergration chapter contains a section on "adaptive multilevel quadrature" that serves as an excellent and very simple introduction into the principles underlying far more complicated subjects such as adaptive finite elements and other multi-level algorithms. This is not a book that strives to be complete in any way, but rather one that presents very well-written and easily understood introductions into the main topics of modern numerical analysis. Many topics that are standard textbook fare are not found here (such as regula falsi, Hermitian polynomials, ordinary differential equations, and so on), but, on the other hands, very interesting non-standard topics such as three-term recursions are included at length, and with good reason. This is a modern and up-to-date book. It is equipped with excellent examples, many figures, nice proofs, and requires little prior knowledge. 100% recommended. Could be used as a textbook for a nunerical analysis class.
