Summary: Excellent Resource for Advanced Chinese Learners
Comment: Dr. Feng covers the most important parts of written Mandarin in a manner from which anyone with a healthy background in spoken Chinese will benefit. Since the book is entirely bilingual, reading even the preface lends itself to vocabulary and sentence-structure development. Although the English translations are somewhat clunky at times, the meaning is always apparent. Its only shortcoming is its errors in English grammar. This should not affect the effectiveness of the text, however. Its section-by-section breakdown makes it easy to reference specific topics. Although it is useful in a classroom setting, it will also serve a student outside the classroom as a reference for formal letter writing, idiomatic expressions like Chengyu and Suyu, and other forms of formal writings one encounters in modern Chinese society.
