Summary: The Pearl
Comment: Kino a man with a wife and son found an enormous pearl and was faced with greed also had to make decisions with greed. Kino had a wife and a son he was a fisherman. One day he came across a pear in the ocean while he was fishing on his boat. Kino was faced with many problems. Kino went to get his pearl priced and everyone told him that it wasn't worth that much and that it was fake but, Kino knew that it was real and wasn't going to go for there little tricks. Kino left his town with his family. Read the book and find out how everything ended and what happened to Kino and his family. I would recommend this book to age ten and up. This was a good book because it always left you thinking on what was going to happen next. I would give this book four out of five star

Comment: Did Steinbeck prove what he wanted? Did his novel achieve what it was supposed to?
I think that Steinbeck succeeded in his intentions, and the intentions that he did not succeed in, we would never know about anyway. The only way we could find out would be from him--he is dead. He used specific quotes to tell people what he meant. Like the priest said "My Children", he said that in a bad way.
In my opinion Steinbeck is trying to prove the disrespect, or the poorness of the people that live by the sea, looking for pearls. He tries to say that they are so gullible and innocent, for example in the way the priest calls them children and the brutal way the doctor treats them, first poisoning the baby, then neutralizing his own poison. I bet that if this case got to the police, they wouldn't care at all. Also Kino had to kill a man in self-defense. He would definitely get sent to jail for life or get executed, even though they attacked first.
In this novel John Steinbeck tries to tell a lot, one way of looking at it is with money and respect come great peril and responsibility. But the message of the story can be interpreted in many different ways, some might say that if you are poor before you will be poor after, like once poor always poor.
The pearl is a wonderful book; I can see why it is a novel. This book is truly maid to be read many times and cherished forever, as said in the introduction.
This novel really made me appreciate the things I have and not to complain so much. I used to think I wasn't as fortunate as others; I don't have my own computer, my own TV, etc. But this book really turned me into an optimist, now I think of myself as a fortunate person. I used to live in Ukraine, and none of my parents came from very wealthy families, but we maid it to America, while others didn't. Besides I am luck to live in a new house, have a nice room, and be able to play the guitar. Maybe I don't have as much technology as others. But I am happy either way, especially when it comes to computer and video games. I am glad I was not allowed to play them when I was younger. Now I realized how much time I would have wasted, and how my vision would have fallen. Especially since everyone in my family has glasses. My vision now is horrible. I can't imagine what It would be if I played those kind of games. I have to thank my parents for all this.
In Conclusion I have decided that the pearl is a wonderful book and I would recommend it for you to read. It has a tragic and surprising end. Also it shows the results when two cultures collide, a bunch of autocrats and simple people. The book shows how everyone turns good when they want something on the outside, but when they either get it or know they will never receive it they turn evil. They try to steal away the thing they are trying to receive.
